Virtual Data Center: Service description

Virtual infrastructure on VMware in Switzerland, managed via self-service

The Netstream Virtual Data Center (VDC) provides you with computing power, memory, storage and networking as virtual infrastructure. We operate the platform on VMware in our own data centres in Switzerland. You set up and manage your virtual machines and networks yourself via self-service.

Deployment models

The VDC is available in three deployment models:

Deployment modelInfrastructureLocation
Public CloudsharedNetstream data centres
Private ClouddedicatedNetstream data centres
Edgededicatedat your site, provided by us

Platform and management

You manage the VDC with VMware Cloud Director, either in the browser or via the API. Each customer receives its own isolated organisation with one or more VDCs. You manage access, services and invoices in the Netstream Cloud Center. With the App Launchpad, you can start preconfigured applications directly in the VDC.

Data location

We operate the VDC in several data centres, exclusively in Switzerland. In addition to our own data centres, we use partner data centres, for example for data backup. With the Edge deployment model, your data stays at your site.

Resources

You combine vCPU, memory and storage freely into virtual machines and can adjust them at any time. The maximum values per VM depend on several factors.

Four storage profiles are available:

ProfilePerformance
lowup to 300 IOPS
standardup to 2'000 IOPS
highup to 10'000 IOPS
ultra-highup to 50'000 IOPS

Availability and redundancy

The infrastructure has multiple layers of redundancy. You can find the agreed availability and how it is calculated in the article Availability of our services.

Network

Each VDC is connected to the internet via an Edge Gateway (VMware NSX). It provides firewall, NAT, DHCP, routing, VPN and load balancing. The Edge Gateway is available in sizes S, M, L and XL; the performance figures are listed in the article Edge Gateway size profiles. You can obtain additional public IPv4 addresses. You configure internal networks and firewall rules yourself. We offer a private interconnect as an additional service in various sizes.

The internet connection is provided on a best-effort basis unless a bandwidth is guaranteed by contract. We have no influence on networks outside our infrastructure.

Operating systems and licences

You can run Windows, Linux and other operating systems. You obtain Microsoft licences from us according to the current SPLA price list.

Backup and disaster recovery

Data backup and disaster recovery are part of the VDC offering and are booked as additional services:

  • Backup & Recovery
  • Workload Availability Service (NWAS) for replication and disaster recovery
  • Archiving in Object Storage

You are responsible for backing up your data, see Shared responsibility.

Your responsibility

You are responsible for configuring and operating the virtual machines, the operating systems and the internal networks. We operate and monitor the platform underneath.

Billing

Billing is monthly on a pay-as-you-go basis according to the resources assigned to you, regardless of their utilisation. You do not need your own VMware licences and do not enter into any licence commitments.

We record the assigned resources several times a day. The average over the month is invoiced in the following month.

Trial

You can test the VDC free of charge for 14 days with 32 vCPU, 128 GB memory and 500 GB storage.
