Backup & Recovery: Service description

Data backup and recovery for vApps and VMs in your Virtual Data Center

Backup & Recovery backs up the vApps and virtual machines in your Netstream Virtual Data Center (VDC). The service is based on Rubrik, is part of the VDC offering and is booked as an additional service. You set up backups and restore data yourself, both via self-service.

What is backed up

Backups are made at vApp level. A vApp is backed up consistently as a single unit, even if it consists of several VMs. When restoring, you choose the entire vApp or individual VMs. A vApp is protected as soon as a backup policy is assigned to it.

Backup policies and retention

A backup policy defines:

  • how often backups are made
  • how long backups are retained
  • whether and when backups are moved to the archive storage

Two backup policies are predefined in a new VDC. You cannot change them. You create and edit your own backup policies yourself, and our support team is happy to help. This is how you determine how often backups are made and how long they are retained.

Backup types

  • Automated: The vApp is backed up regularly according to the assigned backup policy.
  • On-demand: You start a backup immediately, for example before major changes.

Recovery

  • Replace vApp or VM: The selected backup replaces the running vApp or VM. Services on this VM are briefly interrupted.
  • Restore as a new vApp: The backup is restored as a separate vApp and runs alongside the existing one.
  • Instant Recovery: The existing VM is shut down and renamed, and the VM from the backup starts alongside it.
  • Mount a virtual disk: A backed-up disk is attached to a VM of your choice, giving you quick access to individual data.
  • Individual files: You overwrite the original, restore to a different folder, download the files in the browser or provide them to another VM. This requires credentials with administrator rights on the VM.

During recovery, you define how network interfaces are mapped. Recovery from the archive takes longer. We do not recommend file-level recovery for individual files from archived backups.

How long a recovery takes depends on factors such as the amount of data.

Archiving

Optionally, an archive storage can be connected. It is based on Netstream Object Storage but is integrated directly into Rubrik and is therefore a separate storage. Backups are moved there automatically after a defined period via the backup policy.

Data location

Your backups are stored exclusively in Switzerland, at a location separate from the production environment.

Security

  • External clients have neither read nor write access to your backup data.
  • Before a recovery, the system checks whether the data has been changed since the backup.
  • Archived backups are stored encrypted.
  • Two-factor authentication is mandatory for the Rubrik console.

Backups are stored in a file system that only allows new data to be appended. Existing backups can therefore neither be changed nor encrypted. Data in transit is encrypted with TLS.

Self-service management

You manage backups in VMware Cloud Director under "Data Management". You edit backup policies and advanced recoveries in the Rubrik console, where you sign in with the same credentials as in Cloud Director.

Your responsibility

You decide which vApps are backed up with which backup policy, and you test your recoveries. You are responsible for backing up your data, see Shared responsibility. How data is returned and deleted at the end of the contract is described in the article Data return and deletion at the end of the contract.

Availability

You can find the agreed availability and how it is calculated in the article Availability of our services.

Billing

We invoice the backup storage used after deduplication on a monthly basis. The archive storage is invoiced separately.
