Veeam configuration for Object Storage

Settings for an efficient backup configuration with Veeam for Object Storage

Configuring your Veeam backup environment correctly is essential to ensure efficient data backup and recovery. This article explains important settings and best practices to optimise performance and storage usage.

Bucket Policy

Use the storage policies specially optimised and labelled for Veeam (starting with rfxxx). Do not use the standard "ec-noencryption" & "ec-sse" policies. If the Veeam storage policy is not yet available in your Object Storage account, contact our support (https://support.netstream.cloud).

Backup Job - Storage Optimization Settings

The storage optimisation settings in your backup jobs are of central importance. Make sure that you have set the block size to "4 MB" or "8 MB" to maximise the efficiency of data storage. Note that you can enable this setting via a registry key.

Enabling "Extra Large Blocks - 8 MB"

Enabling "Extra Large Blocks" or "8 MB" blocks can further optimise storage usage. Note that you must enable this setting via a registry key. Follow these steps:
  1. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication" in the Windows registry.
  2. Create a DWORD (32-bit) value named "UIShowLegacyBlockSize" and set the value to "1"

MultiObject Delete Limit

Set the maximum number of concurrent delete requests to 125 .

  1. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication" in the Windows registry.
  2. Change the DWORD (32-bit) value named "S3MultiObjectDeleteLimit " and set the value to "125"

Immutability Retention Period

The immutability retention period should be equal to or shorter than the backup retention period. This ensures that your data remains protected and immutable for as long as it is needed.

S3 Repository Task Limit

Set the task limit for the S3 repository to 1 or 2. This gives you better control over the workload and the use of your S3 storage resources.

  1. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication" in the Windows registry.
  2. Create a DWORD (32-bit) value named "S3ConcurrentTaskLimit" and set the value to "1"

SOBR configuration

When configuring the Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR), you should create a separate bucket for every 100 VMs or 20 TB of data to be backed up. This makes your backup infrastructure easier to manage and scale.

Important note on block size changes

Please note that block size changes only take effect after an "active full" backup. Synthetic full backups do not change the block size.

Configuring these settings correctly helps to increase the efficiency of your Veeam backup solution and ensures that your data is reliably protected. Remember to plan and test all changes carefully to avoid unexpected effects.
